This year Italy experienced extreme frost, which damaged thousands of olive trees throughout the country. This damage resulted in a smaller olive harvest, which reduced the availability of Italian olive oil, and, given the same demand for the product, raised the price of olive oil on the international market.
Consequently, experts say we should expect the consumer price for domestically produced olive oil in the United States to rise as well this year, assuming the United States does not import any olive oil from Italy over the next 12 months.
