The annual rent collected by a corporation

The annual rent collected by a corporation from a certain building was x percent more in 1998 than in 1997 and y percent less in 1999 than in 1998. Was the annual rent collected by the corporation from the building more in 1999 than in 1997?

For statement 2, since [ 1 + {x-y]/100 + {xy/10,000} ] R > R; and given that (xy/100) < (x-y); I divided both sides by 100 (since dividing by a positive integer won't change the inequality sign).

As a result, I got the same expression we needed: (xy/10,000) < (x-y)/100.

Hope this division by 100 on both sides isn't a violation of some sort of rule for inequalities.

Hi Varun,
That's perfectly fine and allowed! Good job :D

At 1:42 into the video, you may have meant to say "less than 100 as a result". Because if it goes up by 20 and down by something greater than 20, it will be less than 100.

Hi Chuck! You're completely correct that the explanation should say "less than 100 as a result" at 1:42. While the % decrease from 1998 to 1999 may be less than the % increase from 1997 to 1998, the actual value the rent decreases may still be greater than the actual value the rent increases, and this would result in a final value that is less than the original value (100 in the example in the video).

I've let the content creators know about this, so that the mistake can be correct. However, it may take a while for a new video explanation to be uploaded. In the meantime, your comment will definitely clarify this for the other students who visit this post!

Thanks for pointing this out! :)
